A Second Look at Norwalk’s Mid-Century Modern Architecture
Last year, Norwalk Preservation Trust’s Mad Men Modern tour gave participants an inside look at the Modernist movement in architecture as it played out in Norwalk. For a look at the 2018 tour, see this PDF on our web site.
The event was such a success that we decided to continue the Modern theme in 2019, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus School of Design by Walter Gropius. Gropius fled Germany in 1934, leading the Department of Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design from 1938 to 1952.
This year’s tour will visit additional significant homes from the 1930s to the 1960s, and look more closely at the multi-faceted architectural movement that launched a new, forward-looking aesthetic. It will include a home in Village Creek designed by Edgar Tafel, an associate of Frank Lloyd Wright who worked on Fallingwater and Wingspread, among other famous projects. The owners will share some of Tafel’s original drawings of their house. The itinerary will also feature Norwalk homes by Eliot Noyes and John M. Johansen, members of the famous “Harvard Five” group of modernist architects.
